Canon Off Camera Shoe Cord OC-E3 Review

 Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

For my shoot of Stephen Whitfield I decided to pick up an off camera hot shoe cable. That way I could bounce light however I wanted without the need for a monolight and battery.

Off Shoe Cable OC-E3

While this cable is somewhat of a luxury, and not the cheapest one at that, it does grant more flexibility while using the flash. As an illustration I have invented the scene below.

Let's say that I only have my flash and I wish to maintain a horizontal shot but also want the subject to be lit from below. With a flash alone this can only be done with the camera upside down, not the most convenient posture. With an off camera cable the same look can be achieved without holding the camera in an odd way.

And here is a shot that utilized the off shoe cable and a reflector on an overcast day.
